Buddha Purnima, When Buddha was Born
03, Jul 2018
On the occasion of Buddha Purnima, Celebrated in most East Asia I walked down to Swyambhunath Stupa to Lighten up some candles to celebrate Prince Siddhartha Gautama’s birthday. Siddhartha Gautama was born in Lumbini Nepal in the year 363 BC according to Nepalese calendar and was raised up in Kapilvastu.
Buddhist culture took birth after from the followers he gained during his lifetime. This day is first full moon of the Nepalese year.
Swyambhunath stupa was decorated like a new bride. Hundreds and thousands of people gathering at one place and praying for peace because he was known as “shanti ko Pratik”. Hundreds of People humming “Om Mane Padme Hum” but still I feel the inner peace standing between those people. According to six syllabus Om Mane Padme hum means – generosity, ethics, patience, diligence, renunciation and wisdom. I see there people performing KORA that means circumambulating stupa area and some devotees were performing full body prostration. I could see all the age group of people, people for different religious background enjoying the day in peace and harmony some by lighting up candles, some climbing up to the stupa as the celebration was not labelled for Buddhism.
There were food stalls, triage nurse for first aid & emergencies, lots of Local organizations NGO, INGO, Medical school were actively volunteering helping people for the celebration and were blood donation program as well. Fundraising were done to restore the remaining Stupa and Chaitya which were damaged/collapsed in devastating earthquake 2015.
